When did the history of salsa begin?

The origins of salsa go way back to when slaves from Africa brought their rhythms to Cuba. By mixing the traditions, Rumba, Son and Cha Cha Cha, among others, developed.

In the 40s and 50s, mambo was created in the legendary "Palladium" club in New York with artists such as Tito Puente and Prado Perez. In the 60s, the record label "Fania" was founded, which had a huge impact on the salsa scene. 

What types of salsa are there?

Nowadays there are different salsa dance styles: On2 New York Style, Salsa Puertoriqueña, On1 L.A. Style, Salsa Cubana and Salsa Caleña. 

New York Style
Today's New York Style was formed by Eddie Torres and further developed from the Palladium Style.

The style is known above all for its elegance, and the change of direction in the basic step ("break") always takes place on the second beat of the music ("on two"). The couple dance is often complemented by solo step combinations ("shines").

Salsa Puertoriqueña
This style is also danced on the line, but the "break" is always on 1, which is why it is also known as Salsa On1. 

On1 L.A. Style is a specific style of Salsa On1; with fast and many turns.

Salsa Caleña
As the name suggests, Salsa Caleña comes from Cali. It is known for its fast steps and turns. This style brings a lot of joy and energy.

Salsa Cubana
This dance style is characterized above all by the circular dancing of the partners. This is why it is said that the Cuban style is danced "in a circle".

Rueda de Casino
In this variation, several couples dance in a circle, with one person always giving the commands for the figures and the women changing places in the circle.

As salsa has developed in different places, there are also different types of salsa music. Many groups were founded in New York, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Colombia, which is why the different dance styles have developed in the respective countries. A distinction can be made between rhythms such as Son, Cha Cha, Timba, Charanga, Mambo or by type of music such as Salsa Dura or Salsa Romántica.

Especially at the beginning, it is important to regularly attend a dance class to get used to different dance partners.
